Assistant Plant Manager

BerQ RNG is looking for an Assistant Plant Manager for its dairy manure digester biogas to renewable natural gas (RNG) facility referred to as the Platte River Biogas facility located in LaSalle, Colorado. The Assistant Plant Manager will provide on-site operations and technical management for BerQ’s PRB facility. The successful candidate will report to the RNG Plant Manager and be responsible for supporting the Plant Manager on all operations and staff at the plant. They will be responsible for coordinating and enforcing plant safety protocols and production rules and regulations while providing day-to-day leadership and management of all plant operations functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all daily operations of the plant to ensure that all production and safety goals are met

  • Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and make improvements as required.

  • Participate in hiring, promoting, training and developing direct reports.

  • Supervise direct reports ensuring they perform their duties effectively.

  • Oversee regular lab analyses to ensure optimal digester health, adjusting operations based on findings to maintain efficiency and prevent issues.

  • Ensure daily records of site activities, shutdowns, abnormal operations, troubleshooting, and problem areas are created.

  • With the guidance of the Plant Manager, assign job tasks to plant operators including but not limited to quality checks, plant performance, troubleshooting, general operations, and problem-solving.

  • Provide training, guidance, and mentorship to plant personnel to improve their skills and knowledge.

  • Assist in scheduling shifts, assigning tasks, and managing workloads to ensure efficient staffing

  • Promote a safety-first culture and ensure compliance with all safety standards and environmental regulations

  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and emergency drills

  • Address any safety incidents or concerns and ensure proper reporting and resolution.

  • Ensure the plant complies with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.

  • Work with the Maintenance Manager and maintenance team to ensure that all equipment is operating efficiently and is well-maintained.

  • Track and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) such as biogas production rates, RNG yields, and equipment downtime.

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on plant performance for the Plant Manager and upper management.

  • Support data collection efforts and ensure accurate and timely reporting of operations data to management and stakeholders.

  • Prepare periodic status reports that describe operating performance, issues, and forecasts of future performance.

  • Assist in identifying opportunities for process improvements to increase efficiency, maximize biogas yield, and reduce operating costs.

  • Work with the engineering team to evaluate and implement new technologies or upgrades to the plant.

  • Assist in the preparation of the plant’s budget and monitor expenses to ensure they remain within approved limits.

  • Support resource allocation, including labor, materials, and equipment, to ensure cost-effective operations.

  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.

  • Act as a point of contact for external stakeholders, including farm partners, contractors, vendors, and regulatory bodies.

  • Maintain open communication with the Plant Manager and other members of the leadership team to ensure alignment on goals and strategies.

  • Ensure that farm and community relations are maintained positively and professionally.

  • Ensure the plant adheres to environmental permits and regulations, including air quality, wastewater, and waste management requirements.

  • Assist in preparing and submitting reports to regulatory agencies as required.

  • Support compliance with renewable energy credits and incentives such as RINs (Renewable Identification Numbers) and LCFS (Low Carbon Fuel Standard) programs.

  • Support emergency preparedness and response efforts, including the development and implementation of emergency action plans.

  • Assist in the coordination of incident investigations and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned by management.

  • Participate in Corporate level health and safety program and lead regular site-level Health and Safety meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or Associate degree, Vocational-Technical Diploma, or equivalent technical experience.

  • 5 years of experience working in a biogas production environment or natural gas industry.

  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude and a demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical equipment.

  • Must be able to work both independently and as a team member.

Maintenance Manager

BerQ RNG is looking for a Maintenance Manager for its dairy manure digester biogas to renewable natural gas (RNG) facility referred to as the Platte River Biogas facility located in LaSalle, Colorado. The Maintenance Manager will be responsible for the upkeep and reliable operation, and repair of production equipment and systems, ensuring proper maintenance and mechanical repair of machinery and equipment. The successful candidate will work with the Plant Manager and Assistant Plant Manager to be the lead person in troubleshooting and providing solutions for equipment repairs, as well as making recommendations for equipment enhancements or improvements. They will lead maintenance operators, implementing preventive maintenance strategies, and ensuring compliance with environmental, safety, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the PRB Operations Team and other stakeholders to ensure continuity of support and successful maintenance-related outcomes.

  • Work collaboratively with the PRB team to ensure the effective and efficient repair of all the site equipment.

  • Develop and maintain an effective and efficient preventative maintenance program to ensure continuous operation of all equipment.

  • Plan for work projects, which will ensure proper materials are ordered and available for the repair and maintenance of plant equipment, keeping inventories at a minimum and reduce parts cost.

  • Maintain accurate and timely work records, complete paperwork daily, and ensure timely and accurate input of all maintenance records in the Work Order system.

  • Maintain requisitions tools, equipment, and supplies for maintenance staff to perform work at facilities.

  • Responsible for planning, coordination, and scheduling of major plant maintenance outages.

  • Manage planning, and communications with PRB Plant Team and support labor for maintenance outages.

  • Analyze operations and maintenance data to make recommendations for improving productivity and efficiency in operations.

  • Ensure the plants' equipment are running at full potential while minimizing direct costs.

Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience as a Maintenance Manager in an RNG, biogas, or natural gas environment.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and control systems related to RNG production.

  • Working knowledge of mechanical preventive maintenance schedules, electrical GEAMS, and maintenance schedules in support of RNG Plant compliance.

Laboratory Technician

BerQ RNG is looking for a Lab Technician for its dairy manure digester biogas to renewable natural gas (RNG) facility referred to as the Platte River Biogas facility located in LaSalle, Colorado. The Lab Technician will be responsible for conducting laboratory tests and analyses to support the efficient operation and optimization of the plant. The successful candidate will focus on monitoring feedstock quality, digester health, biogas production efficiency, and ensuring compliance with environmental and operational standards, while working closely with plant operators, engineers, management and manure feedstock suppliers to maintain a stable, productive, and environmentally compliant biogas-to-RNG production process.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect and prepare feedstock, digester sludge, effluent, and biogas samples for analysis.

  • Perform routine laboratory tests, including Total Solids (TS), Volatile Solids (VS), pH, alkalinity, ammonia, volatile fatty acids (VFA), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and other parameters critical to anaerobic digestion.

  • Conduct biogas analysis, including methane content, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and other gas components.

  • Accurately record test results, maintain laboratory logs, feedstock trucking scale records, and analyze data to assess digester performance and stability.

  • Identify trends, issues, or potential problems in the digestion process based on test results.

  • Provide clear and concise reports to plant management and operators with recommendations for corrective actions if necessary.

  • Provide manure feedstock targets on a daily basis to the farms and monitor feedstock offloading.

  • Monitor feedstock quality and composition to ensure consistency and identify any contaminants or inhibitors that could affect digester performance.

  • Support the optimization of the anaerobic digestion process by analyzing data and working with the operations team to adjust feed rates, temperature, and other process parameters.

  • Assist in developing and refining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for lab testing and process control.

  • Maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring it is clean, calibrated, and functioning properly.

  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on laboratory instruments, as needed, or coordinate with vendors for more extensive repairs and calibration services.

  • Follow all safety procedures and protocols in the laboratory to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, including proper handling, storage, and disposal of samples and chemicals.

  • Assist in preparing compliance reports for regulatory agencies, as needed.

  • Work closely with plant operators, engineers, and management to share findings and implement process improvements.

  • Participate in plant meetings to discuss lab findings and their impact on plant operations.

  • Support ongoing research and development initiatives to improve biogas production, increase yield, and enhance digester efficiency.

  • Manage the inventory of laboratory supplies, including chemicals, reagents, and consumables, ensuring adequate stock levels.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field. An associated degree or college diploma with relevant experience may be considered.

  • 1-3 years of experience working in a laboratory setting, preferably in a wastewater treatment plant, anaerobic digestion facility, or similar industrial environment.

  • Proficiency in laboratory techniques, including wet chemistry, gas analysis, and solids testing.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Attention to detail with the ability to accurately record and interpret data.

  • Ability to use lab equipment such as pH meters, gas analyzers, spectrophotometers, and other relevant instruments.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.

  • Comfortable working in an industrial environment, including exposure to odors, noise, and varying temperatures.

  • Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and perform tasks that require manual dexterity.

  • Willingness to work in both lab and field settings (e.g., collecting samples from the plant).

Plant Operator

BerQ RNG is hiring a full-time Plant Operator to operate and maintain its Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) facilities. The Plant Operator will perform day-to-day activities to sustain plant up-time and product quality specifications requirements. This position ensures RNG plant manufacturing processing and compliance with Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) and local government related compliance activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Operational Control: Monitor, operate, adjust and repair digester and RNG upgrading equipment required to maximize gas production in a safe and environmentally compliant manner.

  • Startup and Shutdown Procedures: Execute proper startup and shutdown procedures for RNG production systems, maintaining compliance with safety protocols and regulatory standards.

  • Process Optimization: Collaborate with the engineering team to optimize RNG production processes, identifying opportunities for efficiency improvements and implementing changes as needed.

  • Quality Control: Conduct routine checks and tests to ensure the quality of manure and product gas meet specified standards. Troubleshoot and address issues affecting product quality promptly.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance tasks on plant equipment, including troubleshooting and coordinating repairs to minimize downtime.

  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to and enforce safety protocols and procedures, promoting a culture of safety among team members.

  • Recordkeeping: Maintain accurate records of plant operations, including production data, equipment status, and maintenance activities.

  • Emergency Response: Respond effectively to emergency situations, following established protocols to ensure the safety of personnel and the integrity of the facility.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical certifications or relevant coursework is a plus.

  • Proven experience in operating and maintaining industrial equipment, preferably in the renewable energy sector and/or wastewater sector.
